In November of 2002, Dr. Alex Himaya stood in front of a small gathering of believers at Gracemont Church in Tulsa and cast the vision for a new church. He said, “Tulsa does not need another church. What Tulsa does need is a safe environment where the unchurched can come and hear the life-changing truth that Jesus Christ cares for them and died for their sin.” So began The Church at BattleCreek which launched on August 14, 2003.
In the early months we made a strategic decision not to focus on growth, but instead to focus on leadership development. As a result, when the church launched we had a core of leaders who knew exactly what we were trying to do and exactly where they fit in.
Currently, theChurch has about 5000 people participating in three morning worship services at the BattleCreek campus in Broken Arrow. Over 1200 students and children meet in small groups and worship services on Sundays.
theChurch at Midtown opened on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012 and includes three morning worship services, as well as a full preschool and children’s programs and student ministry. Community groups will meet throughout the week in homes.
As you might imagine, however, the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Changed lives are what drive the leadership at the Church. Our real mission is to glorify God by helping all people, all ages, all the time take their next step with Jesus.
This is not just a slogan on our wall. We have measured our success by that standard from the beginning. With the growth of the church averaging around 35% a year, Alex and the staff are merely trying to find the next thing that God is involved in and joining him in his work there. If we ever stop hearing stories of lives being changed, we guarantee we will stop what we are doing and regroup, no matter how many people are attending.
